Pinarello Time Trial Size Guide: Bolide F TT, F TR and F HR

Pinarello labels every Bolide by seat tube length measured centre to centre, the same convention it uses on its road bikes. Four numbers cover the range: 45, 48.5, 52 and 55. The labels carry across the range, but the fit does not, because the Bolide is really three different frames wearing one name. Please note. The size suggestions here are indicative. They are a starting point built on official geometry and average body proportions, not a guarantee of fit. A time trial position depends far more on your flexibility and your aerobar hardware than on your height. Confirm the size with a professional bike fit, or with our team, before you buy.

Why a time trial size is not your road size

On a road bike, frame stack and reach describe roughly where your hands end up. On a time trial bike they do not. Your weight sits on the arm pads, so the numbers that decide the position are pad stack and pad reach, measured from the bottom bracket to the top of the pad. Frame stack and reach only tell you where those pads can be placed.

The second difference is the seat tube angle. Road race frames sit near 73 degrees. Time trial and triathlon frames run from roughly 76 to 80 degrees, which rotates the pelvis forward and keeps the hip angle open in the aero position. Pinarello holds the Bolide F TT at 77 degrees in every size and the Bolide F TR at 78 degrees.

The third is that most riders end up one label below their road size. The front end has to drop and the pads sit ahead of the head tube, so a tall frame gets in the way. The fourth is the rulebook. UCI article 1.3.013 requires the tip of the saddle to sit at least 5 cm behind a vertical plane through the bottom bracket. A morphological exemption is available on request. The rules also cap how far the extensions may reach forward. Non-drafting triathlon racing has no equivalent limit. One caveat before the tables. Pinarello does not publish a pad stack and pad reach chart for any Bolide. Its geometry sheets stop at frame stack and reach, so the pad numbers have to be measured on the bike.

Quick size finder

Find your height, cross check your inseam, then read the frame stack for each version so you can see what the label actually buys you.

Height is the weaker of the two body measurements. Inseam is better, and your current pad stack and pad reach are better still. The Bolide F HR is left out of this table because Pinarello builds it in three sizes to order.

How to measure yourself

Height. Stand barefoot against a wall with your heels together and look straight ahead. Rest something flat on your head, level against the wall, mark it and measure from the floor.

Leg length (inseam). Barefoot, feet about 15 cm apart, press a book up between your legs as if it were a saddle. Hold it level against the wall, mark the top edge and measure from the floor.

The quick formula. Pinarello sizes in centimetres, so the road shortcut works as a cross check: multiply your inseam in centimetres by 0.66. On a time trial frame the seat tube is steeper and the saddle sits further forward, so the formula tends to overstate the size you need. Treat it as a sanity check.

Bolide F TT (UCI time trial)

This is the disc brake time trial frame Pinarello supplies to its WorldTour riders. At launch, road.cc reported a claimed 1,100 g frame in size 55, UCI approval and clearance for 28 mm tyres. Chainstays are fixed at 395 mm in every size, and the seat tube angle never moves off 77 degrees.

Bolide F TR (triathlon)

Same four labels, different frame. Compared with the TT at the same label, the TR adds 31 to 36 mm of stack and takes 6 to 11 mm off reach. It also steepens the seat tube to 78 degrees and drops the bottom bracket by 8 mm. Head tubes are 20 to 24 mm longer. A rider who cannot hold the TT position can often hold the TR one.

Bolide F HR (track and hour record)

The HR is the track version, listed by Pinarello as the HR C in custom carbon plus two 3D printed builds, all singlespeed. It carries UCI frame code PINA-048 on the product page. Three frame sizes, 390 mm chainstays and a 77 degree seat tube. Pinarello publishes no commercial size labels for it, so the chart below is keyed by seat tube length.

What riders say about Bolide sizing

The recurring theme is the cockpit rather than the frame. A Slowtwitch forum thread running from August 2020 to May 2021 records owners discovering that the Most extensions on the Bolide clamp at 19 mm rather than the 22.2 mm most aftermarket extensions use. Posters in that thread describe fitting AeroCoach extensions, 3D printed adapters or original Pinarello parts ordered through a dealer.

The second theme is the missing pad data. Riders have been asking on the Slowtwitch forum for stack and reach to the arm pads, rather than to the head tube, since at least 2014. The usual answer is to measure the bike or ask the distributor.

There is a paid route around the problem. road.cc reported at the Bolide F launch that Pinarello offers 3D printed titanium extensions shaped from a scan of the rider's forearms. Pinarello does not publish a price for that service.

Between two sizes?

Take the smaller frame if you want a lower, shorter front end and you already ride a long, flat position. Take the larger one if you need stack, if you race long distance, or if you have been propping up your pads with a stack of spacers on your current bike. A long torso pushes you up a size, long legs and a short torso pull you down one.

Then check the cockpit before you commit. The Bolide's bar is integrated, the extensions are non-standard and the pad range is not published, so the frame size is only half the decision. If you are buying pre-owned, our practical guide to buying a used triathlon bike covers what else to inspect.
