Trek Mountain Bike Size Guide: Find Your Fit by Height and Reach

Trek Mountain Bike Size Guide: Find Your Fit by Height and Reach

Sizing a Trek mountain bike

Trek's mountain range has a genuinely useful trick up its sleeve: an ML size that sits between Medium and Large on most models, cleanly solving the in between fit that catches so many riders on other brands. Sizes are by rider height and reach, and Trek publishes clear height ranges per size. Two things to watch. The full power Rail+ is the exception with no ML, and its 40 mm jump from Medium to Large is the one real fit trap in the lineup. And on many models the smallest sizes switch to 27.5 inch wheels, so confirm the wheel size, not just the letter.

Quick note. These sizes are a starting point, not a promise. On a mountain bike your reach preference and riding style matter alongside height, and Trek's bands overlap so you can choose by feel. A test ride or fit is the final word.

Your Trek size by height

Find your height for the baseline size. The ML slot is the star here, tidying up the 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 11 zone where riders usually straddle Medium and Large.

Rider height Trek MTB size
155 to 167 cm S
165 to 175 cm M
173 to 181 cm ML (most models)
177 to 188 cm L
186 to 196 cm XL
194 cm and up XXL (Fuel EX and Fuel EXe)

If you are around 173 to 181 cm, the ML is usually the sweet spot. On the Rail+, which has no ML, you must instead choose between Medium and Large, so read its note.

How to choose your size

Start with height, then use reach to place yourself, comparing with a bike you like. Confirm the wheel size on smaller frames, since the Top Fuel S, Slash S, Rail+ S, Roscoe S and others run 27.5 inch wheels. On the longer travel bikes, especially the Slash, short seat tubes make sizing up for reach easy without a standover penalty.

Cross country and downcountry

The Supercaliber is the World Cup XC race bike, the Procaliber the XC race hardtail, and the Top Fuel the modern downcountry bike that sits a little low at the front, so many riders add a rise bar.

Reach (mm) S M ML L XL
Supercaliber 410 435 450 465 500
Procaliber 405 430 445 460 500
Top Fuel 417 447 462 477 507

Trail and enduro

The Fuel EX is the roomy, hugely adjustable trail bike with the deepest size run, and the Slash the long, slack high pivot enduro sled that rewards sizing up. Fuel EX reach shown is the Low setting; it also offers a small size on 27.5 wheels and a tall XXL.

Reach (mm) S M ML L XL
Fuel EX 427 450 470 485 515
Slash 424 448 468 488 513

The Fuel EX adds an XXL at 545 mm reach for very tall riders. The Slash S is full 27.5, with a very low bottom bracket, so watch for pedal strikes.

Electric

The Rail+ is the full power enduro e-MTB, the Fuel EXe the light, quiet TQ powered trail e-MTB that caters unusually well to tall riders. Note the Rail+ has only four sizes and no ML, so its Medium to Large step is large.

Reach (mm) S M L XL XXL
Rail+ 430 450 490 515
Fuel EXe 428 453 483 508 530

What Trek riders find

The ML size is the recurring win, cleanly resolving the Medium versus Large decision for riders around 173 to 181 cm on the Supercaliber, Top Fuel, Fuel EX, Slash and Procaliber. The single biggest complaint is the Rail+ 40 mm gap between Medium and Large, with no ML to split it, so riders around 175 to 180 cm should demo both. The Slash rewards sizing up thanks to short seat tubes, though its very low bottom bracket draws pedal strike comments. The Top Fuel and Fuel EX sit low at the front, so a rise bar is a common fit tweak. And across the range, small sizes often drop to 27.5 inch wheels, so confirm the wheel size before you order.

Between two sizes?

Reach for the ML if the model has one, since it usually is the answer. Otherwise go smaller for playful handling or larger for stability, and on the Slash lean toward the larger frame. On the Rail+, treat Medium versus Large as a genuine decision. Send us your height and inside leg and we will help you choose.

These sizes are guidance, not a fitting guarantee. Reach figures are current Trek data in the stock setting and are high confidence for the main models; a few extreme sizes and rider height band edges are best confirmed on Trek's live geometry tool for the exact bike you are buying.
