Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Size Guide: Find Your Fit by Height and Reach

Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Size Guide: Find Your Fit by Height and Reach

Sizing a Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz makes it refreshingly consistent: one house rider height chart runs across almost the entire range, so a Medium fits roughly the same rider whether you are on a featherweight Blur or a burly Nomad. What separates the models is reach and personality, not the size label. Two useful truths from owners: Santa Cruz reach sits slightly on the compact side, so long torso or long arm riders often size up, and the choice between two sizes really is a style call, smaller for playful, larger for stable.

Worth saying. These sizes are a starting point, not a guarantee. Reach preference, riding style and your torso to leg split move the answer, and Santa Cruz builds the height bands to overlap so you can choose by feel. Confirm with a fit where you can.

The Santa Cruz house size chart

Find your height. This size applies across the range; the model tables below give the reach so you can decide between two sizes. Not every model offers XS or XXL.

Rider height Santa Cruz size
142 to 154 cm XS (5010 and Tallboy only)
154 to 165 cm S
165 to 175 cm M
175 to 185 cm L
185 to 193 cm XL
193 to 200 cm XXL (most models except Blur)

Because reach runs slightly short, riders with a long torso or long arms often take the larger of two sizes. Shorter riders have fewer options in the aggressive models, since XS now appears only on the 5010 and Tallboy.

How to choose your size

Take your height barefoot, then use reach to fine tune by comparing with a bike you get on well. Note the wheel setup, which changes feel: the Blur, Tallboy, Hightower and Megatower are full 29, while the 5010, Bronson, Nomad, Heckler SL, Bullit and Vala run a mullet, 29 front and 27.5 rear. On the gravity e-bike Bullit, also check standover, which is tall.

Cross country and downcountry

The Blur is the pure XC racer, compact and twitchy, running about one increment shorter in reach than the rest of the range. The Tallboy is the roomy, precise short travel trail bike with the widest size run, from XS to XXL. Both are full 29.

Reach (mm) XS S M L XL XXL
Blur 412 438 458 483
Tallboy 410 435 455 475 495 520

Trail

The Hightower is the long, stable, descent biased trail all rounder that rides big, so size down if you want it lively in tight corners. The 5010 is the compact, playful, forgiving trail bike and the most size inclusive here. Hightower is 29, the 5010 mullet.

Reach (mm) XS S M L XL XXL
Hightower 435 460 480 500 525
5010 410 434 459 479 499 524

Enduro

The Bronson is the burly, centred all mountain bike, the Nomad the descent focused enduro machine, and the Megatower the stable 29 inch gravity racer that runs slightly short, so size up when unsure. Bronson and Nomad are mullet, Megatower full 29.

Reach (mm) S M L XL XXL
Bronson 435 460 480 500 525
Nomad 435 455 475 495 520
Megatower 430 455 475 495 520

Electric

The Heckler SL is the natural handling lightweight e-trail bike, the Vala the balanced full power e-trail bike that rides like a normal bike, and the Bullit the long, planted gravity e-MTB. All three are mullet. The Heckler SL and Vala earn the strongest fit praise in the range; the Bullit has notably tall standover, so short inseam riders should check clearance.

Reach (mm) S M L XL XXL
Heckler SL 435 460 480 500 525
Vala 435 460 480 500 525
Bullit 435 460 480 500 525

Reach figures are the High flip chip position where a chip exists; the Low setting is a few millimetres shorter.

What Santa Cruz riders find

The consistent theme is that reach runs a little compact, so long torso or long arm riders regularly size up, while long leg, short torso riders size down. The Hightower rides long for its label, so size down if you like it playful in the tight stuff, whereas the Megatower runs conservative, so size up when unsure. The Bullit's tall standover is the one clearance caveat worth checking on your inseam. The Vala and Heckler SL get the best marks for balanced, no surprise sizing with good standover and room for long droppers. Very short riders should note that XS now survives only on the 5010 and Tallboy.

Between two sizes?

Smaller rides playful and quick, larger rides calm and planted. Compare the reach to a bike you love rather than guessing, and factor your torso length. Send us your height, inside leg and current bike's reach and we will match you.

Not sure which size rides best? Ask our concierge

Because Santa Cruz reach runs slightly short, the size call often comes down to your proportions. Share your height, inside leg and riding style with our concierge team and we will steer you right. Talk to our concierge.

Everything here is guidance given in good faith rather than a fitting guarantee. Reach figures are current Santa Cruz data; two of the newest models, the Tallboy and Nomad, are very fresh so long term owner feedback is still building. Always confirm against the specific bike you are buying and, where possible, a professional fit.
