Cannondale MTB Size Guide: Scalpel, Habit, Trail and Moterra

Cannondale MTB Size Guide: Scalpel, Habit, Trail and Moterra

Cannondale mountain bike sizing: Scalpel, Habit, Trail and Moterra

Cannondale's mountain range spans four clear jobs. The Scalpel is the cross country full suspension racer, the Habit is the do it all trail bike, the Trail is the approachable hardtail, and the Moterra is the long travel e MTB. The current bikes all run longer and slacker than older Cannondales, so pick by reach and height rather than by the size label you used to ride. As a guide, sizing down feels more playful and flickable, while sizing up feels more stable at speed. Browse what is available on our Cannondale collection.

Please note. These recommendations are indicative and a starting point, not a guarantee of fit. Proportions, flexibility and terrain all matter, so read the reach and stack numbers alongside the height bands and confirm against the exact bike before you buy.

How to measure yourself

Height. Stand barefoot against a wall, heels together and back straight. Mark the top of your head and measure straight down to the floor.

Leg length (inseam). Barefoot, feet about 15 cm apart, press a hardback book spine up into your crotch as a saddle would sit. Measure from the top of the book to the floor. On a mountain bike a good inseam figure helps with standover clearance and confident footing.

What Cannondale riders find

Reviewers rate the latest Scalpel as genuinely capable and composed on descents for a cross country bike, and note that the redesign runs longer than the old Scalpel Si, so riders between sizes often size down. The Habit is praised as a trail bike that suits almost anyone thanks to proportional response sizing that keeps each size riding consistently. The Trail hardtail is seen as approachable and comfortable with a notably tall front end, while the Moterra is described as composed and planted rather than flickable, aimed at confidence on long descents.

Between two sizes?

At a size boundary let your riding decide. Size down for a shorter, more playful and flickable feel that shines on tight, technical trails. Size up for a longer, more stable platform that stays calm at speed and on steep ground. Because Cannondale uses proportional sizing, each size rides much the same in balance, so the choice is mostly about reach preference. Comparing with a bike you already ride is the surest guide.

Stack and reach figures are drawn from official Cannondale data where possible. Rider height bands are indicative: the Scalpel and Trail use Cannondale's own per size recommendations, while the Habit and Moterra bands are estimated from Cannondale's general mountain bike chart. The Habit XS runs a lower stack on a smaller wheel. Moterra figures are for the carbon frame. Always confirm geometry against the exact bike and model year before buying.
