On a pre-owned GT, start with the frame and look for cracks or damage around the head tube, bottom bracket and dropouts; on carbon frames check for deep scratches or signs of impact. Feel for play in the bottom bracket and headset, and check the drivetrain and brakes for wear. On full-suspension mountain models, inspect the pivot bearings and rear shock.
