Who Can Beat Pogačar? The 2026 Vuelta GC Favourites

Who Can Beat Pogačar? The 2026 Vuelta GC Favourites

Tadej Pogačar starts the 2026 Vuelta a España as the clear favourite, chasing the one Grand Tour missing from his record. The interesting question is not whether he is the strongest rider in Spain from 22 August to 13 September. It is whether anyone can make him work for it. A route with more than 58,000 metres of climbing and seven summit finishes gives the challengers terrain to try. The bikes those challengers ride sit in our road collection, and here is who lines up against him.

Pogačar sets the mark

Pogačar already holds the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, and a red jersey in Granada would make him the ninth man to win all three. He returns to the Vuelta for the first time since 2019, on his Colnago. We covered his bid and his bikes in a separate piece on Pogačar at the 2026 Vuelta. Everyone else is racing for the space behind him, and for the chance if he has an off day.

Primož Roglič, the man who knows the Vuelta

If one rider can trouble Pogačar over three weeks, it is Primož Roglič. He has won this race four times, more than any active rider, and he reads its rhythm better than anyone in the bunch. His 2026 form is the question after a training accident, but a fit Roglič is a real threat rather than a podium hopeful. He rides the Specialized Tarmac SL8 for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. You can see the platform in our Specialized collection.

João Almeida, UAE's other card

Behind Pogačar, UAE Team Emirates still counts on João Almeida, one of the most consistent stage racers in the world and a rider capable of a Grand Tour podium in his own right. A crash and a disrupted season are the caveat, and he may end up riding in support of Pogačar rather than for himself. Either way he rides Colnago, the same brand as his leader, which you will find in our Colnago collection. Treat team roles as expected until UAE confirms its plan.

How realistic is an upset?

Beating Pogačar over three weeks is a tall order, and most previews frame the race as a fight for second and third. That does not make it dull. The Vuelta rewards aggression, the summit finishes come thick and fast, and a single bad day can reshape the general classification. If Roglič is healthy or one of the climbers flies in the Sierra Nevada, the red jersey could stay in play deeper than expected.

Ride what the contenders ride
