2026 Vuelta Dark Horses: The Fight for the Podium

2026 Vuelta Dark Horses: The Fight for the Podium

The top step of the 2026 Vuelta a España podium looks spoken for, with Tadej Pogačar the clear favourite from Monaco on 22 August to Granada on 13 September. The other two steps are the real contest. With more than 58,000 metres of climbing and seven summit finishes, this is a route that rewards climbers who can survive three hard weeks. Here are the dark horses worth watching, and the bikes they ride, all of which sit in our road collection.

Enric Mas, the home hope

Enric Mas is the leading Spanish rider in the field and has stood on the Vuelta podium three times. Beating Pogačar would be a stretch, but a home Grand Tour brings the crowds and the motivation, and Mas climbs well enough to fight for the podium. He rides Canyon for Movistar, Spain's own WorldTour team.

Mattias Skjelmose, the rising Dane

Mattias Skjelmose has been building toward a Grand Tour podium, and a strong ride at this year's Tour de France shows the level is there. The Vuelta is a logical place to chase a first three week podium. He rides the Trek Madone SLR for Lidl-Trek, a bike with plenty of depth on the used market. You will find it in our Trek collection.

Oscar Onley and Felix Gall

Oscar Onley has become one of the most promising stage racers around and refocused his season on the Vuelta after a disrupted summer. He rides Pinarello for INEOS, which you can browse in our Pinarello collection. Felix Gall arrives on the back of second overall at the Giro d'Italia, proof that he belongs in Grand Tour podium conversations. Treat every start list as expected until the teams confirm their squads.

Why the podium fight is the real race

When one rider is a clear favourite, the interest shifts to the battle behind. That fight often produces the best racing, because the riders chasing second and third have to attack rather than mark each other. On a route this mountainous, expect the podium order to move around until the final climbs of the Sierra Nevada.

Ride like a Grand Tour contender

You do not need a WorldTour salary to ride these bikes. A Pre-owned Trek, Pinarello or Canyon can put you on the same platform these riders race, in your size, for a fraction of retail. Every bike we sell has its condition verified by our mechanics, ships worldwide, and carries a one-year Bikeroom warranty, with Bikeroom Rider Protection so you can buy in full safety. For bikes with real race history, our team bikes come directly from World Tour teams.
