When Soudal Quick-Step lines up for the 2026 Vuelta a España on 22 August, the frame under them is the Specialized Tarmac. It is the model people search for more than any other after a stage finish, so it is worth being clear about what the current bike actually is, and which version makes sense to buy.
What the SL9 is
The Tarmac SL9 is Specialized's latest one-bike race platform, built to replace separate aero and climbing frames with a single design. It uses a new FACT 12r carbon frame with a claimed frame weight around 687g and complete builds near 6.1kg in the top SRAM Red AXS spec. The front end is more aerodynamically shaped than the SL8, and Specialized positions it as its fastest road bike to date across real-world conditions.
The catch is price and availability. The S-Works SL9 launches around €13,999 complete, with the frameset near €5,799, and for now it exists only as the flagship S-Works. That matters for how you buy one.
SL9, SL8 or SL7: what to actually buy
For most riders, the sensible Vuelta-inspired purchase is not the brand-new SL9. It is a pre-owned SL8 or SL7, the frames the team raced through 2024 and 2025, at a fraction of retail.
- Tarmac SL8 is the frame that won the last two seasons of Grand Tours. It is the closest thing to current race spec on the second-hand market, and we usually hold a good spread of sizes.
- Tarmac SL7 is the value pick, still a genuine WorldTour frame, now at the friendliest prices of the three.
- Tarmac SL9 listings appear as team and early-owner bikes reach us. Stock is thin by nature, so if one is listed it tends to move.
A quick guide: if you want the newest platform and budget is open, watch the SL9. If you want race performance at a rational price, the SL8 is the buy. If you want the most bike per euro, the SL7 still climbs and descends with the best of them.
