Ernesto Colnago began building bicycles at the tender age of 13 with a rigorous apprenticeship at Gloria Bicycles, Italy's leading racing bike manufacturer at the time. Here he rubbed shoulders with other legendary builders, Faliero Masi and Cino Cinelli, as he learned the craft of building professional quality bicycles. It was with the famous Molteni team that young Ernesto would become Eddy Merckx's frame builder during his rise to become the world's most successful road racer.
As competition became fiercer there were many professional riders looking for the benefits of a stiffer frame, Colnago began experimenting with a variety of tube profiles to increase the lateral stiffness of its frames without adding weight or compromising ride quality. Through this experimentation the iconic oversized star-shaped tube of the Master frames was born and its endless pursuit of technological progress began.
Today, Colnago is still at the forefront of craftsmanship and quality. With models like the Colnago C64 carrying the torch of the classic Colnago Master, through to the Colnago V2-r Disc race bike, the brand is thriving and doing better than ever. It's no wonder Colnago is known as the Ferrari of bicycles.
