Head to head

A chat with Alan Marangoni

Do you remember the first time on a bike, and how long has it been?

More than 30 years have passed but I honestly have no clear memories of the exact day I started, but I remember very well the first official bike race, it was April 4, 1993 in a small village in the province of Ravenna. I was nine years old and I was terrified. At the first turn they went off the road in 3 I found myself in fourth position and kept it until arrival. I will never forget that day when it all began...

Remember your first racing bike?

It was a metallic blue Somec, small but very heavy

What was the job you dreamed of as a child?

Since I started running I have always dreamed of one day becoming a professional cyclist, I have always lived cycling with a very strong passion and fate then wanted me to be able to live with cycling.

What do your friends say/like/hate about you?

I am recognized to be a loyal person with an expansive and fun character. A playful born! What I sometimes don't like is that too often I worry about what people can think of me and wasting too much time making everyone happy.

Do you have a secret passion?

If it's secret, how can I tell you?! Ahahah

What is your favorite cyclist of all time?

Definitely Marco Pantani. I experienced his vicissitudes because in the years I ran as a boy he was in full activity and looking at his exploits on the bike I dreamed with my eyes open. Then he was like me so it was really impossible not to become a cheey fan of his.

What's your favorite place to ride?

Now that I live in Riva del Garda (Italy) I really like to make the climb that leads to Lake Tenno, very close to home and very beautiful on a panoramic level.

What was your most beautiful victory?

The Okinawa Tour. It was my only professional win but it tasted really special because it was also the last race of my career. That day I experienced really strong emotions that I will never, ever forget.

What was your strongest teammate ever?

I have no doubt... Peter Sagan, I've seen it very often up close make impossible things easy!

You get recognized on the street, and the kids ask you for an autograph?

I happen to. Recently I was in a shopping mall in Bergamo and a little boy approached his family wondering if I was Alan Marangoni. He asked me for photos and autograph He was really excited to meet me because he was following the youtube channel (GCN ITALIA) where I work from the beginning and he asked me a bunch of questions. His parents were intrigued, too. It's very nice when there are people who appreciate what I'm doing in my current work.
